[ARCHIVED] Norfolk Storm Water Division Launches Engagement and Education Campaign

Resident survey, video series, interactive digital elements and outreach

NORFOLK, Va. – The City of Norfolk’s Division of Environmental Storm Water Management announces the launch of a new awareness campaign aimed at helping residents better understand the division’s roles and responsibilities. The campaign focus is “Managing Stormwater for a More Sustainable Tomorrow” and includes a resident survey, feature videos, interactive digital elements and engaging outreach.

Understanding Stormwater Management

While residents know the Storm Water Division primarily for street sweeping services, the division is responsible for much more. Stormwater management is crucial for minimizing flooding, improving water quality, and protecting local waterways from pollution. Norfolk’s Storm Water Division is dedicated to implementing strategies and infrastructure that address these challenges. From designing and maintaining retention ponds and green infrastructure to enforcing regulations and promoting best management practices, the division plays a vital role in safeguarding the environment.

Stormwater Survey

The information gathering survey seeks to engage Norfolk residents by educating them about the division's efforts and gathering feedback on community awareness and concerns. The interactive survey will cover various aspects of stormwater management, including flood control measures, water quality improvement initiatives, and public education programs. By participating, residents can contribute to shaping future projects and policies that directly impact their neighborhoods. Take the survey through March 14 at www.norfolk.gov/stormwatersurvey

New Campaign: Managing Stormwater for a Sustainable Tomorrow

In conjunction with the survey, Norfolk’s Storm Water Division is launching a comprehensive campaign titled "Managing Stormwater for a Sustainable Tomorrow." This campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of stormwater management and encourage community involvement in protecting waterways. Key components of the campaign include:

  • Employee Videos: Storm Water will highlight key employees who will speak to stormwater management practices and how residents can contribute to reducing pollution and preventing flooding. In essence, the goal is to humanize this important service provided to residents and businesses within the City.
  • Community Events: Visit the Storm Water team at local community events to understand what role the public can play in keeping our local waterways and storm drains clean.
  • Public Outreach: Utilizing social media, local media, and community events to spread the message about sustainable stormwater practices and the division's ongoing projects.
  • COMING SOON! Virtual City Project Map: This online map will highlight major stormwater projects across the City. Residents can review the site and see which types of projects are occurring in their neighborhood or will soon be implemented through the Capital Improvement Project Plan.

 Make a Difference

Norfolk’s Division of Environmental Storm Water Management invites all residents and business owners to participate in the survey, join the campaign efforts and help create a more resilient and sustainable community.
