NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations has been asked to investigate a shooting involving Norfolk Police.
Around 3:46 a.m., on April 27th, police were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 400 block of Monticello Avenue for multiple reports of a person with a weapon.
When police arrived, they found a man with a firearm near a courtyard area.
As Officers were engaging verbally with the man, he did not comply with their commands to put his firearm down, and Officers discharged their service weapons.
The man sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He is expected to survive.
Experiencing two shootings involving officers within a few days is both a difficult reminder that policing remains an extremely dangerous profession and a reassurance to our community that we have heroic police officers working in the City of Norfolk who spend their shifts routinely responding to volatile situations where risk of injury or death is ever-present – with the majority ending peacefully, said Chief Mark Talbot. In both of this weekend’s shootings, officers were forced to react during a situation involving a firearm, and they did so by relying heavily on their training to protect themselves and the public. This weekend has been a challenging one for the men and women of the Norfolk Police Department, but they have carried on without reprieve and with great professionalism so that the residents of Norfolk can remain safe, and for that, we are extremely grateful.
There were no officers or other parties injured during the shooting.
This remains an active investigation and anyone with information about this shooting is asked to contact Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations or to submit a tip through the P3Tips mobile application.
The Officers involved will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
All information provided in this release is based on preliminary investigative findings and may be subject to revision as the investigation progresses.
