[ARCHIVED] Gear Up to Celebrate Norfolk Bike Month

NORFOLK, Va. – This May, celebrate the bicycle lifestyle and how Norfolk keeps getting better for bikes with the 14th Annual Norfolk Bike Month!

Let the good times roll safely – whether it is a family trek through the Northside Park Bike Trail, a solo ride on the Elizabeth River Trail, or meeting fellow bike enthusiasts at signature events, like the Norfolk Bike Expo, Bike to Work Day and Glow Ride. Check out valuable Norfolk Bike Resources and see Bike Months events on the City of Norfolk's calendar to choose your own Bike Month adventure.

The City of Norfolk is committed to providing multimodal transportation options to move around the city with over 80 miles of bike lanes, sharrows, and trails to date and more planned every year. Later this year, construction will start on the Granby Street Bike Lane segment between Willow Wood Drive and Admiral Taussig Boulevard. Designs are being finalized for the extension of bike lanes on Ocean View Avenue between Chesapeake Blvd and Cape View Avenue. And the City has just kicked off a study to implement bike lanes and pedestrian improvements along sections of East Indian River Road, Wilson Road, and Campostella Road to improve connectivity in the south side of the City.

No matter what mode of transportation you use, safety should always be taken seriously. National trends over recent years show increases in severe and fatal injuries among pedestrians and bicyclists. We can all take steps to meet our Vision Zero goal of eliminating transportation-related fatalities and serious injuries in the city by 2050:

  • Motorists are reminded to share the road with bicyclists and give a minimum of three feet of distance when passing (or change lanes, if possible). Bikes are allowed on City of Norfolk streets whether in a bike lane or not.
  • Bicyclists and scooter riders are reminded to follow the same rules of the road as a vehicle: stop at stop signs, yield to pedestrians, obey traffic signals, and ride with the flow of traffic.
  • Helmets are mandatory for those 14 years of age and younger.

Norfolk Bike Month is sponsored by Lime and presented in partnership with the City of Norfolk, Downtown Norfolk Council, Hampton Roads Transit, goCommute, Elizabeth River Trail and community partners.
