The NBN Academy offers a variety of training that was developed by residents and city staff to focus on peer-to-peer, interactive training that supports NBN core concepts. The goal is develop a multi-level educational program that will enhance the capacity of Norfolk’s citizens to be engaged, responsible neighbors and community leaders.
Spring 2020 Schedule
The following courses are open to the public in the spring of 2020.
20 Marketing Your Neighborhood. Thursday, February 20, 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. at Coaster Coffee’s community room, 8418 Tidewater Drive. This course features Janette Woodruff of the Wards Corner Business Association and Nikita Houchins of the City Planning Commission, both of whom are real estate agents. They will discuss how to establish a positive identity for your neighborhood and provide tools for attracting good neighbors.
21 Spring Strategy Series: Facilitation and Consensus Building. Saturday, March 21, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m, Location is being confirmed. Key to civic health is the ability to pull together diverse residents and make group decisions. This course provides tools on meeting facilitation and group decision making. There is a limit of 12 public seats.
6 Neighborhood Standards. Wednesday, May 6, 6 to 8 p.m. at Titustown Recreation Center multipurpose room, 7545 Diven St. The first half of the course is about Code Enforcement. We start off with a bird house exercise to see if residents can identify common code violations. The second half is about motivating residents to raise standards above basic codes.
We use volunteer resident experts wherever we can for our regular courses. Coordination of so many volunteers sometimes means that courses are subject to change. We also reserve the right to cancel if an insufficient number are registered so we encourage everyone to register at the Eventbrite link below.
