Neighbors Building Neighborhoods Academy

NBN Academy offers a variety of training that was developed by residents and city staff to focus on peer-to-peer, interactive training that supports NBN core concepts. The goal is develop a multi-level educational program that will enhance the capacity of Norfolk’s citizens to be engaged, responsible neighbors and community leaders.

MARCH

APRIL

18         *MyNorfolk App and Portal.  Saturday, April 18, 10 to noon, Jordan Newby Anchor Branch Library at Broad Creek computer lab, 1425 Norchester Ave.  This course will cover how to use the app and portal, why it is organized the way it is, and how it is important to your neighborhood.  *There is a limit of 12 residents, and residents must have a library card or apply on site to use the computers. 

27         *Assessing Your Neighborhood.  Monday, April 27, 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. at the Jordan Newby Anchor Branch Library at Broad Creek computer lab, 1425 Norchester Ave.  The first part will be an overview of various online resources for acquiring information, mapping, and using data.  The second part will be assisted use of the tools for your own search.  *There is a limit of 12 residents, and residents must have a library card or apply on site to use the computers. 

MAY

6            Neighborhood Standards.  Wednesday, May 6, 6 to 8 p.m. at Titustown Recreation Center multipurpose room, 7545 Diven St.   The first half of the course is about Code Enforcement. We start off with a bird house exercise to see if residents can identify common code violations. The second half is about motivating residents to raise standards above basic codes.

JUNE

27      NBN Conference and Awards Luncheon.  Saturday, June 27, 8:15 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Old Dominion University Webb Center, 1546 W. 49th Street.

We use volunteer resident experts wherever we can for our regular courses. Coordination of so many volunteers sometimes means that courses are subject to change. We also reserve the right to cancel if an insufficient number are registered so we encourage everyone to register at the Eventbrite link below.
