[ARCHIVED] UpCycle Festival Celebrates Sustainability and Creativity

Repurpose, reinvent and reimagine for America Recycles Day

NORFOLK, Va. – Keep Norfolk Beautiful is excited to partner with Norfolk Public Library for the UpCycle Festival – a community event to promote sustainability, environmental stewardship and creative reuse. The UpCycle Festival takes place Saturday, Nov. 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mary D. Pretlow Anchor Branch Library (111 W. Ocean View Ave.).

The UpCycle Festival brings together environmental organizations, local artists and makers to showcase innovative ways to repurpose materials and reduce waste. Attendees will participate in hands-on workshops, view upcycled art and explore a variety of ways to cut down on waste, conserve resources and create something new and meaningful.

Festival highlights include composting, jewelry making and repair, basic hand sewing, plastic bag basket weaving, metal flower-making and more!

As part of America Recycles Day, the Norfolk Environmental Commission (NEC) will host a panel discussion on actionable solutions and community engagement to combat plastic pollution. Moderated by NEC Vice Chair Ken Kimidy, the discussion marks the second phase of the Commission’s initiative following last spring’s screening of “The Story of Plastic.” Local leaders, environmental advocates and residents are invited to join and explore strategies for meaningful change.

The UpCycle Festival is free and family friendly. Most activities will take place at the Randi Marston Peterson Maker Studio, Youth Services Program Room and outside on the patio.
