Mamie B. Johnson was elected to City Council on May 6, 2014 to represent Ward 3 (PDF).
Ms. Johnson is a career educator. She currently serves as a teacher specialist in math and reading with Virginia Beach Public Schools. She was employed for 14 years as a teacher with Norfolk Public Schools and was an Instructional Specialist for an additional 6 years.
Ms. Johnson represents Norfolk as a member of the Virginia First Cities Coalition and was elected as chair of its board of directors. Virginia First Cities Coalition (VFC) is the state’s only advocacy organization for our oldest and most historic cities. Through Ms. Johnson’s leadership, VFC will increase its presence at the forefront of improving challenging school environments, expanding employment and career opportunities, and making cities a magnet for equitable economic development.
Ms. Johnson is a member of the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission and the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials. Additionally, Ms. Johnson serves as the Norfolk representative of the Hampton Roads Community Action Program.
Ms. Johnson is a member of the Elizabeth River Project board of directors and the Hampton Roads Workforce Council board, an organization that advocates for a comprehensive approach to workforce development, she also serves as a board member of the Community Health Assessment and Community Health Plan and served as co-chair of the Mayor’s Lifelong Learners Commission.
She is a 1984 graduate of Maury High School, where she was elected Senior Class President. She earned her bachelor's degree in Education from Norfolk State University. Ms. Johnson is married to William H. Johnson.
