Martin A. Thomas Jr. was elected to represent Ward 1 (PDF) on August 23, 2016 and was elected Vice Mayor in July 2018.
Mr. Thomas is a partner at the Decker Law Firm in downtown Norfolk where he has litigated personal injury cases since 2006. He is a member of the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization and serves on the Hampton Roads Regional Jail Authority, where he previously served as its chair. Mr. Thomas served on the Norfolk Planning Commission from April 2011 through August 2016 and on the Norfolk Architectural Review Board from April 2014 through August 2016.
Mr. Thomas presently serves on the Board of Peter Decker Children's Charity which focuses on raising money to help sick children at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, and others. He formerly served on the Wards Corner Civic League Board and is a founding member of Wards Corner Now.
Mr. Thomas received his bachelor’s degree in Public Affairs from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) and State University in 2002 and graduated from the University of Richmond T.C. Williams School of Law in 2006.
He resides with his wife, Maggie, and their two sons in the Wards Corner area of Norfolk.
