Environmental Crimes Unit

Investigating & Prosecuting Hazardous Materials Violations

Norfolk has been credited with having the first multi-agency Environmental Crimes Task Force in Virginia, which is responsible for investigating and prosecuting any environmental or hazardous materials violations within and around the city. Members of this team work closely with Department of Emergency Management, Department of Environmental Quality, Environmental Health Department, State Police and other state regulating agencies.

In addition members also partnership with federal agencies such as Environmental Protection Agency, Drug Enforcement Agency, Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, and U.S. Coast Guard. The prosecutions of these crimes help clean up our environment, protect our citizens, and generate funds that help support the purchase of equipment for our investigations unit and for the Norfolk Hazardous Materials Team.
