The StormReady program is a program from the National Weather Service which recognizes communities that have established strong severe weather preparedness practices, including effective warning dissemination, public outreach, and coordination with the National Weather Service.
The City of Norfolk has been recognized as a StormReady community since 2006.
Similar to StormReady, the TsunamiReady program focuses on coastal communities with the capability to receive, understand, and act on tsunami alerts through planning, communications, and public education.
Norfolk remains the only city in Virginia currently certified as TsunamiReady!
These recognitions reflect the continued commitment of our team to maintaining strong preparedness, coordination, and response capabilities for weather and coastal hazards. However, we can't do it alone! We want you and your family to be StormReady as well. Make sure you have a plan, have a way to get weather alerts, and Know Your Zone!
The City was re-certified by the National Weather Service in December 2025 as both StormReady and TsunamiReady, with this designation remaining in effect through December 2030.
