The Lafayette River Watershed is Norfolk's largest and the one area in which we can make the most changes, since it only drains land within Norfolk's city limits. Covering 13.87 square miles, this watershed is home to over 40% of Norfolk's residents and is tidally influenced by the Elizabeth River.
In 2011, the Plan for Restoring the Lafayette (PDF) was announced. This plan was the collaborative efforts of over 30 community, governmental and non-profit organizations commitment to make this waterway swimmable and fishable for everyone to enjoy.
